Teylers Museum is often described as the oldest museum in the Netherlands, but what makes it remarkable is not simply its age. Colonial collecting and the return of the Dubois fossils
The most important contemporary debate surrounding Dutch scientific collections concerns not how objects are displayed, but how they were acquired.
For much of the nineteenth century, Dutch museums benefited from the country’s colonial presence, particularly in what is now Indonesia. Scientists could excavate, purchase or remove archaeological material under political conditions that overwhelmingly favoured colonial authorities. While museums often viewed these acquisitions as scientific achievements, modern research increasingly asks whether local communities genuinely consented to losing objects that held cultural, spiritual or economic significance.
This question became internationally prominent through the Dubois Collection.
