Why Does a Colonial Museum Keep Reptiles?
The apparent contradiction is explained by the museum’s history. The building itself dates from 1908 and was the residence of Richard Kandt, Germany’s first colonial resident in Rwanda. After restoration in the early 2000s, it reopened as the Kandt House Museum of Natural History, with exhibitions devoted to Rwanda’s wildlife, geology and ecosystems.
