The investigation expanded to include several other people accused of producing love charms and magical concoctions intended to influence affection and desire. Records describe mixtures containing everyday materials such as salt, charcoal, olive leaves, palm leaves, water and herbs, accompanied by spoken formulas that participants believed carried supernatural power. The archive also demonstrates that accusations did not automatically imply belief in an organised cult of witches. Many defendants admitted using charms or folk remedies while insisting they intended to help neighbours or solve personal problems. Why Malta avoided a Salem-style panic
