The short answer is no. The “alien skull” story rests on a chain of exaggerations rather than on archaeological evidence.
Early excavators recovered many human bones from the Hypogeum, which had served as a communal burial place over many centuries. Most of the remains were fragile because of the damp underground conditions. Although thousands of bones were found, only a small number of skulls were sufficiently preserved for detailed measurement and description. Temi Zammit’s landmark 1912 report discussed eleven measurable skulls and described them as predominantly dolichocephalic, meaning relatively long-headed—a recognised anatomical variation in human populations rather than an abnormal or non-human trait. The Hypogeum was used between roughly 4000 BC and 1500 BC as a ritual and funerary complex. Excavators recovered pottery, figurines, ornaments, animal carvings and extensive human remains, indicating that the site served as a communal place where the dead were deposited over many generations rather than as a cemetery of individually marked graves. How Long-Headed Skulls Became an Alien Story
The transformation from archaeology to conspiracy happened gradually rather than through a single event.
One important factor was changing language. Early physical anthropology routinely classified skulls by proportions using terms such as dolichocephalic and brachycephalic. Outside anthropology, “long-headed” easily became interpreted as visibly elongated in an unusual or even non-human way.
A second factor was the popularity of alternative history. Writers connected Malta with stories about Atlantis, prehistoric giants and ancient advanced civilisations. Once these themes merged with reports of unusual skulls, the leap to extraterrestrial explanations became almost inevitable in fringe literature.

Several features encourage myth-making:
- The monument is underground and visually unlike most prehistoric sites.
- It contains thousands of human remains, immediately giving it an aura of mystery.
- No written records survive from the people who built it.
- Early excavations inevitably left unanswered questions.
- Visitors encounter striking architecture and remarkable acoustics that feel unusual even today.
These are real characteristics, but they do not point towards extraterrestrials. Instead, they demonstrate how easily authentic archaeological uncertainty can become filled with speculative stories.
