Introduction
Libreville’s National Museum of Arts, Rites and Traditions is one of the most distinctive museums in Central Africa because many of its most important objects were never created as works of art in the modern sense. From research collection to national museum
The museum began as a research project rather than a conventional public attraction. In 1960 the Gabonese government invited researchers from the French Office for Overseas Scientific and Technical Research (ORSTOM), including ethnomusicologist Herbert Pepper, followed by Pierre Sallée and ethnologist Louis Perrois, to document Gabon’s cultural traditions and establish a national collection. The earliest museum occupied Herbert Pepper’s former house in Libreville. As collections expanded through the 1960s, a purpose-built museum became necessary. The institution evolved through several reorganisations before reopening in a modern building in 2019 as the National Museum of Arts, Rites and Traditions of Gabon, reflecting an expanded emphasis on ritual life as well as artistic heritage. The museum’s origins continue to shape its identity today. Unlike galleries assembled primarily through purchases, much of its collection emerged from systematic field research. Objects were documented together with recordings, photographs and notes intended to preserve the cultural knowledge surrounding them rather than simply their physical appearance. Masks, music and everyday objects on display

In their original settings these masks were activated through movement, costume, music and carefully controlled performances. The museum grew directly out of ethnomusicological research, and Pepper’s fieldwork generated extensive collections of songs, instrumental performances and oral traditions. Those recordings remain a valuable companion to the physical collections because they preserve performances that cannot be represented by objects alone. Why these collections are still living heritage

How to visit without misreading sacred heritage
For visitors interested in unusual museums, the greatest temptation is to see ritual collections as displays of mystery or magic. That approach misses much of what makes the museum important.
Many objects on display originally served specific ceremonial roles connected with remembrance, social authority, initiation, healing or communication with ancestors. Their significance depended upon who could see them, when they appeared and how they were used. Once placed in a museum, they become accessible to everyone, but their original cultural meanings do not disappear.
