How the stone jar landscapes were discovered and studied

The first major archaeological investigations of the Plain of Jars came during the French colonial period, particularly through the work of archaeologist Madeleine Colani in the 1930s. Her surveys and excavations examined jar sites, nearby caves and associated objects, helping establish the idea that the jars were connected with ancient funerary practices rather than ordinary storage. Burial traditions, legends and archaeological evidence

For many years, the most popular explanation was that the jars were ancient burial containers. Archaeological discoveries have increasingly supported this view, although the reality appears more complex than a simple “stone urn” interpretation.

UNESCO identifies the jars as part of Iron Age funerary practices, with the wider landscape preserving evidence of a society that created and used these megaliths over a long period. One of the most important recent discoveries came from excavations of a large jar at Site 75. What legend adds to the mystery

The Plain of Jars also exists within local storytelling traditions. Folklore has linked the enormous vessels with giants, heroic rulers and ancient feasts. These stories are culturally important because they show how communities have explained a landscape whose original creators are unknown.

However, these legends are not archaeological evidence. The strongest scholarly interpretations come from physical remains: human bones, burial structures, quarry evidence and associated artefacts. Visiting Xieng Khouang’s unusual open-air collection

The Plain of Jars offers a very different experience from a traditional museum. There are no display cases containing a few representative objects; instead, the entire landscape acts as the collection. Why the site feels different from other ancient monuments

The Plain of Jars is unusual because its mystery is not based on a lack of evidence. Stone circles, pyramids and temples often come with inscriptions, legends of rulers or clear architectural purposes. The Plain of Jars instead offers fragments of a vanished society:
