Hidden beneath Mount Zlatar near Konjic, ARK D-0 was one of socialist Yugoslavia’s most closely guarded military secrets. How the Tunnel of Hope sustained Sarajevo

The Tunnel of Hope represents almost the opposite philosophy. During the Siege of Sarajevo, the city was largely cut off from the outside world. In 1993, workers and volunteers completed an approximately 800-metre tunnel beneath the airport runway, connecting the besieged city with territory outside the encirclement. Through the tunnel travelled food, fuel, medicine, humanitarian supplies, military equipment and communications infrastructure.
