The detection of asteroid 2018 LA
Asteroid 2018 LA was first spotted by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on the morning of 2 June 2018. Within hours, astronomers calculated that the object was on a collision course with Earth. This combination of telescopic tracking before impact and photographic evidence during atmospheric entry transformed what would normally have been an anonymous meteor into a fully documented scientific event.
How search teams recovered Motopi Pan fragments
Knowing approximately where the asteroid had broken apart did not immediately reveal where surviving fragments had landed. Researchers combined orbital calculations, atmospheric modelling and fireball observations to predict a strewn field within the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
The first organised expedition took place between 18 and 23 June 2018. Scientists from the Botswana International University of Science and Technology, the Botswana Geoscience Institute, the University of Botswana’s Okavango Research Institute and international collaborators searched on foot across difficult terrain. What the meteorites revealed
Laboratory analysis showed that Motopi Pan is not an ordinary stony meteorite. It is classified as a howardite, a type of HED (Howardite–Eucrite–Diogenite) achondrite formed from volcanic rocks that originated on the asteroid 4 Vesta, one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt. Researchers concluded that asteroid 2018 LA was probably ejected from Vesta after an ancient collision before eventually entering an Earth-crossing orbit through gravitational interactions within the asteroid belt. Because scientists observed the asteroid before impact, they could compare its telescopic brightness, shape, orbit and size with the physical meteorites recovered afterwards. Few meteorites offer such a complete scientific record linking an object in space with specimens in the laboratory.
