For museum visitors, this makes the surviving masks especially interesting. They are not archaeological relics from a vanished culture but working objects connected to performances that continue to evolve.
Authenticity, reinvention and tourism
Slovenia’s carnival collections raise an important question: when does a living tradition become a museum exhibit, and when does a museum help keep that tradition alive?
