The discovery in Chehrabad salt mine
The first Saltman was discovered accidentally in 1993 when workers at the Chehrabad (Douzlākh) salt mine encountered human remains during mining activity. The find included a remarkably preserved head with hair and beard, part of a leather boot, clothing fragments and objects associated with mining life. Further discoveries followed after additional remains were found in 2004. Rescue excavations in 2004 and 2005 revealed more human remains and, importantly, the archaeological context around them. Instead of isolated bodies, researchers began to understand the mine as a place where accidents had occurred and where workers, tools and everyday objects had become preserved together. The number of identified individuals has been refined through continued study. Earlier reports often referred to six Saltmen, while later research has suggested a minimum of eight individuals when fragmented remains and additional evidence are considered.
