Introduction
Vanuatu’s most intriguing archaeological sites are not enclosed within museum walls. Some of the country’s greatest historical discoveries lie in coastal excavation trenches, sacred islands and landscapes where archaeology and living tradition overlap. At Teouma, scientists uncovered the oldest known cemetery in Remote Oceania together with the bones of an extinct giant horned turtle, transforming understanding of the Pacific’s earliest settlers. Further north, Chief Roi Mata’s Domain combines excavated sites with oral history and continuing customary protection, making it one of the world’s clearest examples of a cultural landscape where archaeology supports, rather than replaces, inherited memory. These places are unusual because they are not simply relics of the past: they remain culturally significant, carefully managed and, in some cases, subject to customary restrictions that are still respected today.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Chief Roi Mata’s DomainUNESCO World Heritage CentreChief Roi Mata’s Domain - UNESCO World Heritage CentreJuly 8, 2008…
Turtles, Tombs and Vanuatu’s Deep Past
The extinct horned turtle found at Teouma
The Teouma archaeological site on Efate Island was discovered only in 2004 during construction work. Excavations quickly revealed one of the most important Lapita settlements ever found, including the oldest extensive burial ground yet identified in Remote Oceania. The site dates to around 3,000 years ago, when the first seafaring communities expanded eastwards into previously uninhabited Pacific islands.
Among the most unexpected discoveries were the remains of the extinct horned turtle Meiolania damelipi. Unlike modern turtles, this remarkable species carried heavy armour, a club-like tail and distinctive horn-like projections on its skull. It survived in Vanuatu long after disappearing elsewhere before eventually becoming extinct, probably after sustained hunting by the islands’ earliest human inhabitants combined with ecological change. Its unusual appearance has made it one of Vanuatu’s most distinctive prehistoric animals, often compared to something from mythology despite being entirely real.[Vanuatu Travel]vanuatu.travelTravel Vanuatu Tourism OfficeVanuatu Tourism Office - Vanuatu History: Island Nation's Cultural Heritage…
For visitors, there is little dramatic architecture at Teouma itself. The fascination lies in what archaeologists uncovered beneath the ground. Excavated artefacts, pottery and animal remains are interpreted through the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and in academic publications rather than through a large visitor attraction. The site’s importance rests in the evidence it provides for early Pacific migration rather than in monumental ruins.
Lapita burials and the first island settlers
Teouma’s cemetery transformed ideas about the earliest inhabitants of Vanuatu. More than sixty burials have been excavated, revealing funerary customs unlike those seen in later Pacific societies. Several skeletons were buried without their skulls, while detached skulls were carefully repositioned alongside other bodies. Some graves contained decorated Lapita pottery, shell ornaments and stone tools, suggesting complex rituals surrounding death and remembrance.
These discoveries have prompted considerable discussion among archaeologists. The unusual burial arrangements are not treated as evidence of mystery for its own sake but as clues to changing mortuary traditions, ancestor veneration and the movement of human remains after initial burial. Scientific analysis of the skeletons has also contributed to debates over the origins of the Lapita people and their relationships with later populations across the Pacific.
The attraction of Teouma therefore lies less in unresolved “ancient mysteries” than in how archaeology continues to refine understanding of one of humanity’s greatest episodes of oceanic exploration. Each excavation season has added detail to a story that combines genetics, archaeology, environmental evidence and careful interpretation rather than sensational speculation.[Reddit]reddit.comBurial 10 at the 3000-year-old Teouma Lapita cemetery, in Vanuatu (an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean), and which…
Why Chief Roi Mata’s Domain is both archaeology and living heritage
Chief Roi Mata’s Domain demonstrates a different relationship between archaeology and history. Rather than reconstructing a forgotten civilisation, researchers worked alongside communities whose oral traditions had preserved the story of Roi Mata, a paramount chief believed to have lived around the early seventeenth century. Archaeological investigation confirmed the locations associated with his life, death and burial while also revealing material evidence that closely matched longstanding traditions. UNESCO recognised the landscape in 2008 as Vanuatu’s first World Heritage Site because of this exceptional convergence of archaeology, oral history and continuing customary practice.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Chief Roi Mata’s DomainUNESCO World Heritage CentreChief Roi Mata’s Domain - UNESCO World Heritage CentreJuly 8, 2008…
The protected landscape spans three linked places:
- Roi Mata’s residence on Efate.
- The place where he is said to have died on Lelepa Island.
- His burial site on Artok Island, where he was interred with members of his retinue according to oral tradition.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Chief Roi Mata’s DomainUNESCO World Heritage CentreChief Roi Mata’s Domain - UNESCO World Heritage CentreJuly 8, 2008…
Unlike many archaeological sites that became disconnected from local communities, these places have remained subject to customary authority. Traditional prohibitions on disturbing the burial area have reportedly been respected for roughly four centuries, helping preserve both the physical remains and their cultural meaning. UNESCO describes the property as a continuing cultural landscape rather than simply an archaeological monument because its significance depends on the interaction between the surviving sites and the communities that continue to care for them.[UNESCO World Heritage Centre]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Chief Roi Mata’s DomainUNESCO World Heritage CentreChief Roi Mata’s Domain - UNESCO World Heritage CentreJuly 8, 2008…
For visitors, this means the experience differs from entering an open-air museum. Access is generally organised with local guides, and interpretation places as much emphasis on inherited stories, chiefly authority and customary law as on excavated artefacts. Respect for local protocols remains an essential part of visiting the area.
Sacred landscapes rather than lost civilisations
Vanuatu’s archaeological sites are sometimes presented as mysterious because they combine striking discoveries with oral traditions that have survived for centuries. Yet the strongest evidence points towards continuity rather than disappearance.
Teouma illustrates how scientific excavation can recover the lives of the Pacific’s earliest settlers through pottery, burials and extinct wildlife. Chief Roi Mata’s Domain demonstrates that oral history can preserve remarkably accurate geographical and historical knowledge over many generations. Together they challenge the popular image of archaeology as a search for forgotten worlds. In Vanuatu, the most compelling discoveries are those where excavated evidence, community memory and living custodianship reinforce one another instead of competing for authority.[unesco.org]whc.unesco.orgWorld Heritage Centre Chief Roi Mata’s DomainUNESCO World Heritage CentreChief Roi Mata’s Domain - UNESCO World Heritage CentreJuly 8, 2008…
These landscapes also highlight the country’s broader approach to unusual heritage. Their significance does not come from spectacular ruins or tales of hidden treasure, but from the rare combination of deep prehistory, enduring belief and careful stewardship. Even today, the protection of Chief Roi Mata’s Domain continues to evolve through collaboration between customary custodians, the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and UNESCO, including recovery work following the 2024 earthquake, underlining that these are living places whose preservation remains an ongoing responsibility.[UNESCO]unesco.orgsupports post-earthquake recovery of the Vanuatu CulturalUNESCO supports post-earthquake recovery of the Vanuatu Cultural…
